About Dam Safety

Dams in Alberta are built, maintained, operated and decommissioned in a safe manner that is aligned with provincial, national and international guidelines and best practices.

Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI) provides regulatory oversight to ensure dam owners take active responsibility for the integrity and safe operations of their dams through the Alberta Water Act and Part 6 of the Water (Ministerial) Regulation – Dam and Canal Safety.

The Dam Safety Regulatory System ensures dam owners comply with the legislation with the following compliance assurance objectives:

  • Education
  • Prevention
  • Enforcement
